Information about car coating
Want to apply a car coating to your paint, wheels or windows? Then you have come to the right place at Custom Car Care. We have different coatings available ranging from the standard ceramic coating for your paintwork to long-lasting coatings for your windows for better visibility in the rain. These are the best known coatings for your paint but there are several other types. Nowadays you also have a car coating based on polysiloxane polymers which is very user friendly for the do it yourself detailer and also a graphene coating which is very strong and durable and also dust repellent.
Installing or having an auto coating installed has recently become very popular because of the strong water-repellent properties and durability that they have. It provides a sleek warm shine and reflection that will make your car shine even more than before. In addition, it is also a protective coating that allows you to protect your paint from minor wax scratches and strong chemicals that would otherwise damage the paint. Because of this, the ease of use quickly became apparent so that after applying a car coating you soon had much less cleanup work and also a superior shine. The ideal product for long-term protection for your car.
You can choose from 3 different types of coatings namely the popular ceramic coating that has ceramic SiO2 components. These often range for end users between 12 months and 5 years of durability. It gives extra shine and reflection to the paint and provides protection against UV rays, wax scratches, chemicals, contaminants such as iron particles and tar, and so on. In addition, it also makes the surface highly water and dirt repellent which will keep your car clean longer and also make it easier to clean. Typically, a car with a properly functioning ceramic coating will be washed 60% faster than a regular car. In addition, you will also have to wash the car less quickly because the car stays clean longer as dirt cannot adhere to the treated surfaces. Drying also goes very smoothly since water cannot remain on the paint.
Ceramic coatings have different levels of durability and ease of use depending on durability. In general, the rule is: the easier it is to apply and the more forgiving the ceramic coating is in taking off the less durable they are. Some coatings need only 1 coat, while others need 2 or more coats. This changes the performance and durability of the ceramic coating.
You also have polysiloxane coatings. These are tremendously user-friendly coatings made from polymers. Because they are so user-friendly, you can naturally guess that they are also less durable. Often these have a durability of 6 to 18 months. They are easy to apply, cheaper, easier to take off and also last longer when opened. This makes them attractive to the novice detailer or as a solution for a budget project. Ceramic coatings and graphene coatings have solvents in their formula that make the coating spreadable. When they dry they become super hard so if you have made a mistake you don't have much choice but to sand or polish. Polysiloxane coatings are much more forgiving as they can be taken off even after hours or days without sanding or polishing.
Despite being polymer-based, it is also a very water and dirt repellent coating. It gives extra shine and reflectivity although these are not in the same category as traditional ceramic coatings. It is still a significant improvement over no protection. In addition, it is also more durable than a traditional wax making this an easy solution for someone who wants the performance of a wax but doesn't feel like rewaxing their car every 3 weeks.
Then there are graphene coatings. This is the latest revolution in the auto detailing industry. It consists of a single layer of carbon particles made of graphene, which is the hardest known material in the world. Although this technology is still being developed every day, there are already impressive products on the market that are either entirely made of graphene or a mixture of ceramic and graphene. Graphene has the advantage of being more durable than ceramic coatings. Because it is still a newly developed technology, it is not yet readily available, especially for end users. This is because the application of these coatings is not obvious. It also has the advantage that it dissipates heat very well and is also dust repellent. You can compare its performance in terms of gloss, reflection and water and dirt repellent properties to a ceramic coating. Durability often ranges from 3 to 7 years.
There are also special coatings for rims which are often based on SiO2 or Graphene. This is because both are very durable and can withstand heat well. A traditional wax or polymer-based coating would not last even a few weeks.
You can also opt for a glass coating. These coatings are specially made for your glass and windows. They ensure the proper drainage of water and rain getting on the windows. This will improve your visibility while driving, especially in a rainstorm. You will find that you hardly need your windshield wipers anymore and your wipers will also glide more smoothly over the windows. This also ensures that you need less washer fluid and that your wipers will last longer. You will also remove insects and dirt from your windows much faster and easier. You can also apply a traditional ceramic coating to your windows but these generally do not last as long as specialized glass coatings on windows.
Applying an auto coating generally always goes the same way. Whether you are applying a coating to your paint, glass or wheels and whether it is made of polymers, SiO2 or graphene. It is always of great importance that the surface is as clean as possible and that all contamination is removed. The surface should also always be degreased with a surface degreaser so that the coating can properly adhere to the surface. You will apply the car coating then with a small microfiber applicator and spread it in overlapping motions on a small area and make sure you have applied an even coating everywhere. Then you will wipe off the excess product with a microfiber cloth. Typically, a coating must always cure for 12 to 24 hours before it is allowed to get wet. They usually cure further over the next 7 to 14 days but may get wet by then. As long as they do not come in contact with chemicals. This is why it is always requested not to wash the car for the first 2 weeks.
You will also often see guarantees given on the durability of coatings. These should always be taken with a grain of salt. The durability that the manufacturer mentions is almost always theoretical. In perfect conditions where the coating is hardly or not in contact with sunlight, dirt, water, etc. and is not washed and given a protective coating every 4 weeks by a manufacturer.
When a durability of 7 years is stated, this is often in reality only 4 years of effective protection after which often after 3 years the water and dirt repellent properties begin to diminish. Usually you can assume that the lower the durability indicated for coatings, the more honest and realistic they are. In fact, we have applied coatings that should have a durability of 1 year and still have super performance after 14 months. And we have also had coatings where another detailer gave the customer a warranty of 7 to 10 years and 3 months after application there was nothing left to see.
Although a coating is very durable, it also works best when properly maintained. It is strongly discouraged to go to a car wash, these can completely destroy the coating after just a few turns. Washing with a pH neutral car shampoo and a microfiber wash mitt always remains the best option. The pores of the coating can also get clogged so the protection will still be there, but the water and dirt repelling properties will no longer be visible. In that case, a good wash and the use of an iron particle remover is recommended to remove contamination from the pores. Finally, after every 3 to 5 washes depending on how much you wash your car, it is also best to apply a protective layer with a spray coating. This coating will, as it were, sacrifice itself by absorbing the blows of dirt, water, pollution and so on so that the coating itself has less to endure.
You will also find that the prices that are advertised for placing an auto coating vary widely. This is because some advertise a ceramic coating but only apply a spray coating that lasts a few months. While others apply a professional 2 or more layers of coating as standard that can easily last 5 years. A spray coating cannot be compared to a real coating as offered here.
If you are interested in a car coating but don't know which is the best option for you then you may also contact us anytime. We will gladly advise you which ceramic coating or other car coating is best for you!
